Silent Hill has enough fans, although they are far from the army of Resident Evil fans. But with the release of the remake of the second part, it became obvious: Konami still knows how to make horror games that attract both veterans of the series and new recruits. The author of this text is just one of those who got in thanks to the remake.
Developers from Bloober Team tried their best to drag in a new audience. And not in vain: in just three days the game sold more than a million copies. Critics and players are delighted, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to grumble about. Let’s find out where Silent Hill 2 Remake hit the bull’s-eye, and where it missed.
🏙️ Ghost Town: Love and Fear in One Bottle
The atmosphere is straight up bingo. Fog, ruined streets, creepy enemies – everything is done in such a way that you are instantly immersed. Even without the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia, we can admit: the remake recreated the vibe of the original.
But if at first you are frightened by every shadow, then after a couple of hours the darkness is no longer frightening, and the fog turns into “local sunny weather”. But the sound is another matter. Here the developers have charged on all hundred: from wild work of Akira Yamaoka to abominable creaks and sinister voices, which break you even on moral willpower.
You walk through the building, open doors – and in one room something creepy is whispered in your ear. You’re like, “What is it?” But you won’t get an answer, of course, because that’s how Silent Hill works: it leaves more questions than answers.
🧍♂️ Characters: Suffering Cannot Be Ignored
The main character, James, is brought to this hell by a letter from his dead wife (or is it not dead?). Along the way he encounters people who have more demons of their own than all of Silent Hill. Secondary characters like Angela and Eddie are written so powerfully that you believe them, empathize with them, and fear them at the same time.
The themes of violence, phobias, and trauma are all heightened to the extreme in the game. It’s not just creepy. It gives you thoughts that you can’t easily get rid of.
🔪 Carnage: A Bit Boring, But Bearable
Battles quickly turn into a routine: the enemies, on which at first you rush with terror, after a couple of hours you begin to calmly endure. Pipe, shotgun, rifle – there is an arsenal, but by the end of the game you will have plenty of ammo, as well as first aid kits.
Bosses? Well such. Except for Pyramidhead, no one really bothers me. Even on medium difficulty I would like a little more challenge.
🧩 Puzzles: A Test of Attentiveness
The puzzles are one of the pluses. Everything here is done simply but tastefully. You read notes, look for items, put puzzle pieces together. There’s also a quiz that tests how attentive you were at the beginning of the game. Spoiler: if you can’t remember the details, you’ll have to google the answers.
🌫️ Verdict: More Uncomfortable Than Scary
Silent Hill 2 Remake is not a horror that makes your heart jump out, but a game that oppresses and crushes. Silence, lack of life, and loneliness are the real enemies here.
But there are nuances: monotonous gameplay, boring enemies, sometimes dragging on. This does not make the game bad, but those who are not used to the slow pace may be scared off.
Advantages:
- Creepy sound and music.
- Impressive characters.
- Legendary Pyramidhead.
- Interesting puzzles.
Disadvantages:
- It gets boring after a while.
- Weak bosses.
- Routine battles.
- Occasional bugs.
The remake is definitely worth checking out, especially if you haven’t played Silent Hill before. But this is a story for the amateur. Go through it, experience it, and… maybe never come back here again.
